Name: Giant Stoneflies (Family Pteronarcyidae)Order: Plecoptera - Stoneflies Natural History: Our largest stoneflies, the Giant Stoneflies are often found in healthy Potomac streams. They are usually found in mixed substrate that contains cobble, detritus and woody debris. Despite their large size and impressive appearance (some of us call these schwarzenegeri), the larvae are mostly herbivores and detritivores. Some species require three years to complete their life cycle. The adults are typically nocturnal and do not feed. Pteronarcyd stoneflies are not tolerant of pollution.
