The Deer Slayers-

We think that increasing the coyote population is
a bad idea. If the coyote populations
increase, the coyotes will eat too many deer and the
coyotes will be overrun with disease.
Then, we will have a bigger problem on hand.
So, what we believe we should do is to lessen the
cost of license and tags to hunt and also
you could allow people to hunt on Sunday. Then,
you could also give people incentives like
tax credits of one hundred dollars if they kill a
deer. You could also let them sell the deer
meat that they get from killing the deer. Next, you
could also let the hunters be able to
donate the deer to a charity or shelter of some type
but you have to make it at no cost to
the hunters like getting it butchered for free. I
also think extending the hunting season will
decrease the number of deer.
Letting the coyote population get bigger will be
taking a risk of decreasing the deer
population to where hunters will not enjoy hunting
anymore. Coyotes can also spread
disease, and what if the coyotes harm livestock?
Making the coyote population bigger is a
horrible idea. Farmers can easily get a damage
permit, and kill them.
I also think we could not use birth control on
deer. If deer were meant to have medicine
it would be found in nature. This is not good. So,
it is unethical to supply them with birth
control. Thus hunting is ethical due to
predator/prey relationship. If you cannot do the
tasks of being a farmer such as taking care of crops
then you simply should not be farming!

My point of view of bring coyotes in to cut the
population. Is if there is an over population
of coyotes then there would be no deer to hunt. Also
the coyotes would eat smaller animals like
rabbits, squirrel, turkey, and many other animals if
they eat all those animals then there would
be no other animals for us to hunt at all. If there
is nothing for the coyotes to eat then they
would come in city limits and eat cats and small
dogs. Also if they come into city limits they
could breed with dogs and people would not want them
and eventually the coyotes dogs would
turn and hurt people and there kids.
Also if the coyotes would come into the city
limits hit by cars. That would mean people would
get hurt and their cars would even get damaged or
even towed. Also they could even hurt the
passenger. That would mean that there insurance
would go up.
The good part of the coyotes is we could hunt
them for their fur. Also that we could sell
there fur for profits. Also then we would make more
money for more hunting. Also one bad
thing about hunting the coyotes and we hunt then out
we would have nothing else to hunt.

Even though some people don't think that hunters
have any rights to kill deer, hunters play
a very important role in our environment. If you are
for or against killing deer, hunters
keep the population of deer lower than it would be
if there were no hunters. Hunters hunt
so that they can have food to support their
families, donate the meat to organizations, and
narrow the deer population to a smaller number.
Hunters are supplying a necessary food
source for many people in need. Deer overpopulation
affects hunters in a few ways but
hunters mostly provide protection to people. The
large deer population increases a persons
risk of hitting a deer while their driving and
injuring their self. It also increases the rick of
diseases including limes disease which comes from
deer ticks. So, hunters help the
community from getting hurt even if you're a tree
hugger and don't agree with the killing
of deer. Researchers at West Virginia university
found that deer foraging threatens the
survival of ginseng, a medicinal plant that lives on
the forest floor and generates more than
$2 million in income annually for harvesters. My
group would like to solve the deer
overpopulation problem in a few ways. People could
allow hunters to hunt their land if it is
said to be overpopulated. Also, instead of having a
strict number of days for hunters to
hunt, they could extend the hunting season to a
longer time so that the hunters could
narrow the number down a little more. Lastly, there
should be a phone number that people
can call and ask for a hunter to come to their land
and hunt their property. I Hear of at
least one story a week of someone hitting a deer
when they were driving. I belong to a
volunteer fire company and there was an accident a
few weeks ago where a deer jump
before it was hit and went threw a ladies windshield
and injured her. Deer are starting to
threaten peoples lives and their need to be some
kind of change to help out the community.

If the coyote population increases the deer
population will decrease. We think both deer
and coyotes should have a bag limit so they both
have the same population. We're
concerned about the potential threat deer farming
poses to the state's deer hunting
heritage. Nationally the private sector market
driven movement of live deer and elk has
been responsible for disease outbreaks in
free-ranging deer. The threat to West Virginia's
deer population has increased with the recent spread
of Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) to
states east of the Mississippi River.
Deer are very charismatic animals, and many people
in enjoy seeing, watching,
photographing, or hunting deer. Although a highly
valued species, the white-tailed deer has
reached record population levels in many states and
will continue to grow. Densities may
exceed 40 deer per square mile in some rural areas,
and over 100 deer/square mile have
been documented near many eastern metropolitan
areas. Overall, public attitudes toward
deer are becoming more negative as deer populations
increase. Public concerns include crop
damage, damage to landscape plants, deer/car
collisions, transmission of Lyme disease,
and effects of high deer populations on habitat
quality for both deer and other wildlife
species. White-tailed deer garner more interest than
any other wildlife species in Virginia.
Many Virginians relish the chance to hunt, watch, or
photograph this most popular game
animal. As the largest herbivore (plant-eater) in
the Commonwealth, deer have a profound
impact on native forest ecosystems. Deer also
inflict millions of dollars in damage to crops,
trees, and gardens and are a safety risk on our
highways.

As hunters, we feel good to play an important
role in the deer population issue. Hunters have
the right to kill deer. Without hunters, the deer
population would be through the roof, and their
would be more issues with random deer accidents. We
dont want our children to be driving
down the road and hit a deer. This would cause them
serious phycological issues for us. Hunters
also supply the food supply for many in need.
Finally, the more deer, and deer accidents we
have, the more disease we would have in the
community.
According to the WV dnr:The landowners must see
that adequate numbers of hunters are
allowed access to their property during the deer
hunting seasons and monitor their harvest to
ensure that an adequate number of does are removed
each year. The State of West Virginia
must allow the hunters a sufficiently liberal season
and bag limits to remove the surplus
deer.(http://www.wvdnr.gov/Hunting/FundDeerMan.shtm)
Some way we can lower the deer population in
a humane way are increase hunting season,
allow hunters to shoot more than one deer a day, and
increase natural predators.
We, as hunters, feel as though we play in
an important part in not only helping the

The Deer Rangers “Bang for a buck”
We the hunters are important because they are
one of the primary sources for keeping the
white-tailed deer population moderate. We do this by
hunting them and that usually keeps the
population down. Although, people have not been
responding and we still need more hunters.
Hunting is good, because it keeps the population
down, but if we over hunt then we could lower
the population too much and even make the deer
extinct.
The deer problem affects us because we need
more hunters, but it also increases game. This
is because the deer are over populating and there
aren’t enough people to hunt the deer. This is
one of the reasons the deer are over populating.
When they over populate, they can create
dead zones in the forest. If we could get more
hunters or extend the hunting season, we could
definitely help with this problem.
Our first solution is to try to create a longer
hunting seasons. These will both cost almost
NOTHING. The hunting season is from Nov. 15-Jan. 3
right now. If we could increase the
season and the limit of deer that can be killed, we
could decrease the amount of deer. Also, this
could affect our life style because it will give us
more food to eat. The other solution is to get
more hunters and we could definitely decrease the
white-tailed deer population. These would
both affect our lifestyle because we would increase
the vegetation and deer meat for food.
Out of all solutions, we prefer to increase the
number of deer that are able to be killed and
the length of the hunting seasons. If we kill more
and kill them for a longer time, we could keep
the deer population down and this solution would
cost absolutely nothing. These are our
solutions and how they will affect the deer and
lifestyle of Virginia.

The Hungry Hunters
“Controlling the deer population since 2010”
We hunters play a very important role in
controlling the overpopulation of deer. As deer
population is succeeding maximum population size,
both hunters and deer benefit. We benefit
because if we live in the woods, and are solely
hunters. We have food and can use the fur and
bones, and deer population is minimized. Basically,
the controlling of the overpopulation of
deer could be good or bad for us because if there
are a lot of deer, we have more food and fur
to sell, and it’s bad because if they control it too
much, we could lose food and money. Deer,
specifically white-tailed deer, are a keystone
species in the forest habitat. If they
overpopulate, not only is their species threatened
but also other species, too. The
overpopulation of deer can lead to deforestation. As
the population density increased because
their predators were hunted, they ate more plant
species, decreasing the plants’ species’
populations. This environmental issue will soon
lead to not enough food (the plants), which is a
limiting factor. If the deer population keeps
overpopulating, the food web is affected too, this
is a major concern.
We are important because we can control
their overpopulation before it gets out of hand.
We keep the over population in range for the most
part. The deer concern about their
overpopulation could affect us greatly because if
deforestation occurs, the deer population
density would decrease to a great extent, in which
would give us less to hunt. If we have less to
hunt, that would distress our livelihood of hunting
the deer. One solution that we hunters
prefer is that we should spray only some does a
year, which prevents reproduction of more
fawns. Another solution is that since the population
density is increasing immensely, we should
be able to hunt 8 deer a year east of the Blue Ridge
Mountains and 7 deer west of the Blue
Ridge Mountains. One other helpful solution is that
we should be able to use dogs to track down
and hunt deer at only certain point in the year. We
could really help and influence the
overpopulation of deer, especially because we are
the hungry hunters.

Every year in early October, thousands of
hunters venture into the woods in hope of
bringing home a fresh deer to feed their families
and boast to their friends about. But what if
there were no deer left to hunt. What is the reason
for there being no deer you ask? Coyotes.
if coyotes are introduced into the deer’s
environment then the results could be disastrous.
Yes,
the coyotes would help control deer populations but
some hunters make a profit and even a
living off of hunting deer. Releasing coyotes into
the deer’s environment could have horrible
effects on the deer and the deer hunters.
In addition to killing them, coyotes put deer
on edge, which in turn keeps them on the move.
This is bad for hunters because it would be harder
for them to find and track the deer.
Even if the coyotes avoid preying on the older
adult deer, they would prey upon the young
fawns. The answer to that is simple, if the coyotes
kill the fawns as soon as they are born then
the adult deer will eventually die and the deer
population will not be renewed.
If coyotes were introduced into the deer
population, then a hunter would be lucky to bring
home one healthy deer per season. But how can we
control the deer population? The answer is
simple. Allow the hunters to get their license at a
cheaper price and allow them to hunt more.
Local butchers could also lower prices for the more
deer brought in, which would help increase
the amount of deer people kill.
The population of deer is a problem but with
the right choices the problem can be controlled
easily.

Keeping happy and healthy populations
We believe that hunting is right because we
have to kill the deer before they over populate
even more. Humans also threaten the wildlife by
building communities on once the deer’s
habitat. If the deer have too high of a population
density even more there will be more car
crashes. Deer will wander into places where they’re
not supposed to be and much more. We can
accomplish this task in many ways and here are some
of them. It is possible to help deer
populations by hunting deer and not killing their
natural predators. By using added rules to the
normal regulations we will be able to keep deer
populations in better condition. For example we
can make the hunting seasons longer. The normal
hunting season averages from November 15 to
January 3 but we can make it longer so all the deer
don’t die but it lessens the over
populations. So we should extend the hunting season
to November 15 to January 9. If we do we
will be making more money by selling the deer meat
to restaurants and people. We could also
give some of the meat to orphanages, Poor homes, and
Hunger shelters. Also we can feed are
families and other families meat. We can be doing
all that why lessening the population of
deer. There can also be a permit for off season
hunting. You can only buy one permit for the
whole off season days. Also you won’t be able to
hunt while the deer are breeding because it
might be hard to reproduce and might really threaten
the ecosystem. Also the food web goes
from sun to plant, plant to deer, deer to bobcats,
dogs coyotes, mountain lions, and humans. Also
this is how it should be because our founding
fathers and native americans survived on deer,
but they had to kill all the predators to kill the
deer without being killed. So this is our
statement why hunting is good.

that not many people will hunt. You said you are not
allowed to hunt during mating season
though. Hunting season starts in November and mating
season also starts in November.
So you are saying we are not allowed to hunt during
hunting season?

Extending the hunting season by six days will probably
not work because you can only
kill so many deer in a season. Even if you do extend it,
there will still only be the same
amount of deer dead per season.

As part of the hunter community, I feel that we
should have a place in the stakeholder group.
There are both, Predators and Prey in the life of
the White Tailed Deer. These are called
keystone species. There are a few predators of the
White Tailed deer, for example: there is
the Grey Wolf, Cougar, Bear, and humans. But there
are a few that are prey of the White
Tailed Deer, for example: Deer and Cougars. These
are all links to the food web. This shows
who eats who/what and that all carnivores depend on
deer for things too. The deer food web
goes from the sun to the grass, the grass to the
deer, and the deer to any of the predators I
listed up top.
Some deer find their way onto the freeway get
hit by cars. Over populating deer can cause
deaths and fatal injuries for people. Many of the
accidents are when deer see light when
crossing the road and freeze and they get hit and
cause brutal car crashes. If hunters kill some
deer no human can have a deer caused accident.
Hunting deer is not bad unless too many are
slaughtered. If hunters cut down the population it
would be helpful to all groups of people.
Hunting may be cruel to some people but really it
isn’t.
White tailed deer are a species that are
continually growing in population. These deer are
eliminating all of the limiting factors that keep a
lot of other species alive. If the population
keeps growing without limitation then they can cause
other species to become endangered or
even extinct. If hunters are enabled to hunt white
tailed deer more often during certain
seasons than the population of the deer might stay
stable.
Sometimes the population of the deer decreases
rapidly. When the deer and the hunter
population decrease, the deer get to populate. To
accommodate for this, the clubs have set an
amount of deer to kill, or they have started raising
young fawns and then release them. If there
aren’t any deer, then there won’t be any deer
hunters. If there aren’t any deer, there won’t be
any deer predators as well.
Hunters can have problems with deer. Some
hunters call highly trained specialist to
tranquilize the deer and move them to a new area.
Others can get different highly trained
specialist to get out most of the deer in the area.
Then most of the deer want populate the
forest and ruin it. Then the hunters will get a new
problem. It is what the deer eat; (berries,
twigs, and grass). The club of hunters will come
together and use teamwork to kill the plants
that the deer eat.
If we are let in the this group, we will make a
change, it might cost us hunter more on
supplies, but it will enable hunters to put the U.S.
White Tailed Deer population in check.
Multiple times per year we could send out our
specialized hunters to places we need it and less
to areas that we don’t. At a small possible chance
that one of our hunters gets hurt, it will keep
the deer population in check, therefore making the
whole world a safer place. If the population
is not reduced, then white tailed deer will overrun
the human race.
If, the hunters are not a part of this group,
then this cycle will cease to exist and the whole
“predator vs. prey” structure will fall apart.
Therefore this “system”, will eventually break and
will bring more than just this species to
extinction.
