Last fall we went to Canaan Valley National Park and we seen over 100 deer. We stopped at this pull off place. It was a real brushy area and you could see way down through there. There was a deer real close. The older deer was rough looking and the little one came up after I stuck my hand out. The deer came up and smelt my hand.

I'd just like to say that I've lived in the country my entire life and deer have never, personally, been a nuisance for my family. I can tell you, however, that there is definitely an abundance. Every morning I used to get up early with my Dad and go out, look in our field and see quite a few deer, including two albinos (Those things are beauties!). They still frolic around, although I'm never up early enough to see them...but they definitely leave signs that they were here. In conclusion, I do believe we have an overpopulation issue with the white-tail deer in the area, even though I've never had a problem, many people have.

This event did not happen to me but to my cousin. This event had a large effect on my life. My cousin went hunting one day with his grandfather. His grandfather was doing a deer run and my cousin was in a tree stand. My cousin being a first time hunter made a mistake that changed his life. He accidentally shot and killed his grandfather. He does not hunt anymore, and neither does anyone in our family. This event made newspaper headlines and changed the way people look at hunting.

In Pennsylvania where I used to live they had the same problem with the deer not being very big size. They set a limit for two years of where you could only shoot bucks with a certain rack size, and it helped them get bigger deer.  I think West Virginia should do the same. Not only with the certain rack size but also make the deer itself a certain size. If we do this for a year or two we might be able to produce bigger deer therefore people would not have to shoot as many as they do now. Also, it will help for many years if we do it right because they size genes will be passed on to the young deer if we do not take advantage of this solution.

One time I went hunting two years ago in November I think. We got there around five in the morning and stayed there until about eight. We were about to leave and a deer comes out. My dad gave me the gun and showed me where the deer was. I picked up the gun, I looked through the scope, and I seen it. I didnt want to kill it so I said I couldnt see it. My dad was yelling at me telling me to shoot it, but I stuck to my story. So we left shortly after that. I was happy I didnt have to kill Bambi. What can I say im a pansey. So me not shooting the deer did not help the problem. The deer are still overpopulated. We need more hunters to kill them, not people like me.

My parents and I were coming back form the mall in Cumberland, and there was a good bit of traffic on rte. 28. It was a cold and windy night. We were going about 55-60 mph when all of a sudden about 5-6 deer ran out in front of us, we slamed on our brakes and managed to miss them except for one. We pulled the car over and the deer. Then we drove off. Later on that evening we got home and looked at our hood...and it was in the shape of a "W."  To prevent this, I think my parents and myself included should drive slower and keep a sharp eye out for deer running in the road

My father drives a truck that he owns. He hauls produce all around the east coast. He has hit many of deer while driving. I believe that a lot of damage is created to vehicles during a vehicle/deer collision. I also believe that the deer population is extremely high. Although I enjoy watching them i do believe the population needs to decrease.

My brother and I were on our way to my uncle's in virginia, just a little past the state line. He lives down a back road and we were on our way to pick up my brother's four wheeeler. He doesnt have a truck so we had his friend to help us. He was ahead of us and we were going about 55mph and all of a sudden Jerry hit the brakes and we all came to a stop. It happened so fast that we didnt even see the deer coming out of the woods. When the deer ran out Jerry ran over it with the back tire. The deer raised up and tried to walk away when we realized it broke its back leg but it didnt hurt the truck at all.  The deer got up and went into the woods and we felt terrrible for what had happened. I think to prevent this from happening to us and everyone here, that hunting season should be extended a few weeks. This way the population of the deer more decrease slowly. This way all the crops and vegatation isnt disturbed. I'm not saying people go out and kill them so they wont be around to disturb us and our belongings but to eat the meet also.

Going to Winchester one evening for dinner, we got off of route 37 and something hit our car. So my dad turned around because he had seen a deer and figured that is probley what hit us. Well when we turned around and pulled over there was another car and the driver said that the deer had ran out in front of him and he hit the deer. A piece that broke off of his car is what had hit ours. He had called the police because its back was broken and they had to shoot it. So we stayed there until the police man arrived and he had to shoot the deer. That was the first time I had ever experienced an incident with a deer.

One day during hunting season of 2002, I was sitting in my tree stand waiting for a deer to shoot. It was getting kind of late and I had been sitting in my stand since about 11:00 and I was getting ready to head back up to the truck when all of a sudden a monstrous 8 point came out of the woods and right into the line of fire. I drew back my bow, aimed and fired and nailed my first deer with a bow. Ever since I have never seen a buck that big ever since.

It was a dark night and my brother was bringing my mother and I back from the store. My brother started to slow down some and said, "Look at that." There was a deer standing in the left lane and started walking toward our lane. My brother tried to slow down more, but it was to late, the deer came into our lane and it hit the drivers side of the van. My brother stopped to check the van and the deer. My mom told me to help if I was needed. The van was messed up very bad and the deer was still alive. My brother said that it was going to die soon. We left the deer. We didn't have to move it because it landed off to the side of the road.
