Too Many Deer - Solutions

Back to main Forum Page

The topic is the effects of deer overpopulation on our region, and what to do about it.  This is a moderated conversation, where CI reviews entries for relevance to the topic and then posts them to the website on a daily basis.   There will be, at least, three tracks for this conversation: 1) personal experience stories (not hunting); 2) discussion of the problem; and 3) seeking solutions.   This forum began on Wednesday, February 16, 2005.  The comment form is on the main forum page

My solution to West Virginia's deer population problem is advertisement. If people made more pamphlets advertising great hunting conditions and numerous deer, hunters would be attracted to take home some almost guaranteed meat. These pamphlets should be distributed to surrounding states. The double advantage to this solution would be the population decline and the increased revenue the state would bring in from increased hunting permits and from people from other states shopping at our stores. I feel this would be a great solution.

What would happen if: the hunting season for deer was extended a month and only once every two years?

An idea that I think could work on this deer population problem is allowing people to hunt a lot more during winter. The people who help control hunting, like DNR, can help make sure that it's controlled. It would probably be hard to control some people, but it could work. If the extra hunting is controlled well enough, the results would be pretty good. Everyone would be happy.

Moderator Comment The Achilles Heel of the "bring in more hunters and allow more hunting" solutions is that there are plenty of deer to hunt in neighboring states.  Will enough people be willing to travel to WV to hunt, and create the necessary hunting pressure to bring the deer population down?   How many in-state hunters do you know who don't get all the deer meat they and their friends want to eat?  For some thoughts on possible solutions, click on the link for forester David Warner's complete text - on the main Forum page.

A possible solution to the deer overpopulation could be to sell extra stamps and tags to allow people to legally kill more deer each year. The extra tags and stamps would also provide more money for the state to use.

I can think of as couple ways to get rid of some of the deer population. One way is to let people hunt all year around. They could do that until the deer population goes down. But then if it goes back up they could just let people hunt all year around again. Another way is to hire people to hunt. Like they could kill as many as they want, when they want. And if they are getting paid they will hunt more than they usally do. They could pay them by how many they killed. Like pay them by the deer.

I think the hunting season should be extended and we should be able to kill two deer a day than one.

To reduce the deer population in the county, a few things can be done. For starters, maybe something needs to be done to attract more people to hunting. Not as many hunters as there use to be. Possibly paying people to hunt or something of the like can be done. Awarding people to hunt deer could attract a lot more hunters. Also, maybe they should extend the time to hunt and cut back on some of the restrictions. A lot are necessary, but some can be cut back. Every little bit has the potential to make a difference.

I feed the deer corn, so it will keep them away from the veggies.

My solution to the problem of overpopulation of white tailed deer is to allow West Virginia residents to harvest 4-6 deer per hunter. The advantages to the solution is the population would definitly decline and West Virginians would be able to put food on the table. The average hunters don't have the greatest salary so this would help them to take care of their families.

I think people that own open fields that have hundreds of deer that graze in their field each night at dusk should allow certian hunters to knock off a few to try and control the problem that we face today.

My solution is to hunt more moths in the year and add to your license.

My father and his friend has permits to hunt on an orchard around where i live. Last year one night they ended up with 30 some deer. They hunted from 8 o'clock untill 11pm. The truck was piled full to the top with deer. They were not wasted any anyway they were given away to people who wanted them. So i think that they should extend the hunting season by a couple of weeks and not take the permits away during the hunting seasons. That way there is not as many hit in the road, damaging crops, and eating everything on the forest floors that is needed by other animals

We have too many deer in our area.  One solution the problem would be to extend the hunting season from September 1st to December 31st.  That would lower the deer population in a few years.

I think that to solve the deer overpopulation problem we should have more open deer seasons. One good solution is to be allowed to hunt every Saturday during the cold season. This would work good because people couldn't slaughter the deer through the week but could relax on their day off work to do some deer hunting.

Many people might have ideas on how to decrease the size of the deer population. Have more hunting or longer hunting seasons, poisons, fencing, and using other animals to predation on the deer. These are all good ideas to decrease the number of deer, but it will not solve the problem. I think there is another way. We have to find out what is causing the deer population to clime so high. There never use to be so many deer here before. What is causing them to grow in number? If we can find out what it is, then we can find out how to fix it and then keep the deer population under control and a reasonable size. This will help to keep them from coming out of the woods to find food because all of it inside of the woods has already been eaten by other deer. The number of crops, gardens, and other vegetations being eaten and or destroyed by deer will decrease. It is bad when an animal species will destroy itself because of the limited amount of food available to eat isnít high enough to sustain the number of species present. I am afraid this is what will happen to the deer population, if something isnít done.
