CTree Projects - Spring 2012

Route 9 Bike Path

4/29/12

The Eastern Panhandle Trailblazers were the recipient of a WV Project CommuniTree kit to plant 9 shade trees that included oaks, maples, poplars, sycamores, and gums.

Bill Yearout, Director and President of the Trailblazers, completed the application and organized the planting. The volunteers that contributed to this project learned how to properly plant trees and the benefits of increasing urban tree canopy. This tree planting was a continuation of a project that began in the Fall 2011 called   “Plant 9-on-9”. The Trailblazers, WV-DOF, and the Eastern Panhandle Conservation District have an initiative to increase the urban tree canopy along the Route 9 Bike Path by planting trees in increments of 9 at a time. Mr. Yearout and his group were assisted by CommuniTree Representative Herb Peddicord from WV Division of Forestry.

The 9 shade trees planted this Spring 2012 are currently providing the Route 9 Bike Path with shade. As they grow they will increasingly reduce stormwater runoff, add aesthetic value to the popular hiking and biking trail, and grow the county’s urban tree canopy.
