East Hardy Middle School - Kimsey Run Lake

Spring 2014

East Hardy Middle School, in partnership with the WV Department of Natural Resources, received a WV Project CommuniTree Shade-16 kit to plant sixteen shade trees (oaks, maples, poplars, etc.) at the Kimsey Run Dam in Hardy County, WV. The trees were all planted along the edge of the parking lot by middle school students from East Hardy Middle school, to help beautify the parking lot, and add shade to the area. There were 27 students along with their teacher that helped plant the trees, as well as pick up trash in the area. The whole event took only 2 hours. WV Division of Highways came the day prior to help dig the holes for the students.

A note from the Project Leader, East Hardy Middle School teacher Jill Crossland:

“This tree planting was not only fun, but probably one of the most efficient plantings due to the hard work of the students. With the help of our CommuniTree Liaison and the WV-DNR, this planting was educational for the students on tree health and the importance of the trees for the area. Many of the students mentioned coming to the dam to fish, so planting these trees only added more value to the area for these students.”
